The Save Chicago Campaign got a big boost in May, when NIU President Doug Baker called me to his office to tell me that he had spoken with the Kristin Barrett, vice-president of the 1871,a Chicago-based incubator for entrepreneurs, and that she wanted to learn more about our campaign.

Just a few days later, I toured the 50,000 square-foot facility in the Merchandise Mart, with two outstanding members of our board, Steffen Canino, director of marketing/communications, and Nathan Lupstein, director of volunteer programs. Joining us was Dr. Lisa Freeman, executive vice-president and provost at NIU.

Our day began with Kristin taking us on a tour of the beautiful co-working space. Immediately, we saw that 1871 was a place that is very conducive to creativity. Young entrepreneurs, mostly from digital start-up companies, filled the meeting tables, and inspiring artwork and quotes graced the walls.

After exploring the facility, we made a Prezi presentation to Kristin about our plans and goals for the Save Chicago Campaign. She was so impressed that she immediately offered to provide us office space and mentoring to help take our movement to the next level. We hope to use our time at 1871 to add more structure to this movement and plan some exciting volunteer projects for the upcoming school year.

One of the best parts of our day at 1871 special was being accompanied by our Dr. Freeman. She is a great example of our university going above and beyond to support students and nurture student career success.

On behalf of the Save Chicago Campaign, we would like to thank Northern Illinois University and 1871 for this incredible opportunity.

Randiss Hopkins, who grew up in the North Lawndale neighborhood on Chicago’s west side, is an NIU music education/jazz performance major who is active with the Campus Activities Board and has worked to tirelessly create change in creating the Save Chicago Campaign.

Jordan Lynch

Jordan Lynch

Northern Illinois University quarterback Jordan Lynch (Chicago, Ill./Mt. Carmel HS) will travel to New York City and be honored as a finalist for the 2013 Heisman Memorial Trophy, the Heisman Trophy Trust announced Monday during ESPN’s Sportscenter broadcast.

Lynch is the first Huskie player to be selected as a finalist for the trophy, which annually recognizes the most outstanding college football player in the country.

The Heisman Trophy will be awarded at 7 p.m. (CT) Saturday, Dec. 14, during an ESPN national television broadcast. Lynch is one of six finalists for the award in 2013.

“Obviously I am extremely happy for Jordan to get this invitation to the Heisman Trophy Ceremony this weekend and be honored as a finalist,” said NIU head coach Rod Carey. “This is a great honor for him and it recognizes the great career he has had. It is so well-deserved that he gets to go to New York. I’m also very happy for NIU, that along with Jordan’s accomplishments, our team and our university will be put on center stage in New York.”

Carey said Lynch’s unique abilities make him more than worthy to be honored as one of the nation’s best.

“I have never been around someone who has 64 percent completion rate as a passer and has the rushing records that would be great for just a running back,” he said. “He can do both. He’s a special, special athlete, and we were sure fortunate to get to coach him and have him on this team at the time we did.”

Typically, Lynch recognized the contributions of those around him.

heisman-trophy[1]“It’s a great honor and a great accomplishment, but I couldn’t do it without my coaches, teammates, family and the support staff,” Lynch said.

“It’s hard (to get selected from a non-AQ school). One of the biggest things is you have to win games, have a winning team and your stats have to separate you from the bigger schools. I knew if I had a chance to get there it would be a good individual season, and I knew it would take a great year as a team for us. I’m really happy and, like I said, I wouldn’t be here without my coaches and teammates.”

Sean T. Frazier, NIU associate vice president and director of Athletics, congratulated Lynch on behalf of the entire university.

“NIU is extremely proud of Jordan and what he has accomplished, along with his teammates, this season,” Frazier said.  “He is a great leader and a model student-athlete. I’m happy for Jordan, for his family and for our coaching staff. To be recognized as a finalist for one of the greatest trophies in sports is tremendous for Jordan, for our football program and for Northern Illinois University.”

Lynch, who won the MAC’s Vern Smith Leadership Award as league MVP and Offensive Player of the Year, is also a finalist for the Manning Quarterback Award, the Senior CLASS Award and the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award. He was a finalist for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and a semifinalist for the Davey O’Brien Quarterback Award.

Jordan LynchThe only FBS player in the country who is his team’s first option both as a passer and as a runner, Lynch was named MAC West Offensive Player of the Week a record eight times this year while compiling 4,557 yards of total offense on 1,881 rushing and 2,676 passing yards. He gained over 300 yards of total offense in 11 of the Huskies’ 13 games in 2013 (all except blowout wins over Purdue and UMass when he did not play fourth quarter).

Lynch ranks fourth nationally in total offense (351.0 yards per game) and is second in both rushing yards (1,881) and points responsible for (276). He is only the fifth player in NCAA history to have 20 rushing and 20 passing touchdowns in a season and has broken the NIU single season record for touchdowns scored.

Lynch has twice set the NCAA record for rushing yards by a quarterback with 316 and 321-yard outings versus Central and Western Michigan, respectively, and is averaging 6.9 yards per carry on the season. He is completing 63.1 percent of his passes and has thrown for 150 yards or more in 12 games while reaching the 100-yard rushing mark seven times, including in each of NIU’s last six contests.

Perhaps most impressively, Lynch is 24-3 as the Huskies’ starting quarterback in two seasons, including a 12-1 mark in 2013. He has one game remaining as he will lead NIU into the 2013 San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl against Utah State on Thursday, Dec. 26.

Good things continue to happen at Northern Illinois University. Last week, NIU was selected as one of just 16 institutions in the U.S. to be designated as an “Innovation and Economic Prosperity University” by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities for fostering entrepreneurship and developing external partnerships. It further affirms to students and their families that NIU is a leader in real-world higher education.

After a busy Homecoming weekend connecting with many alums, I continue to visit the many departments throughout campus. Our Bold Futures workshops are being held, taking aim at discovering the tremendous possibilities for NIU’s future. A Facebook group is created for each workshop so that participants can further the discussion outside the workshop. Many great ideas are surfacing that merit our attention, and we are empowering participants to pursue their implementation. Thank you to the more than 800 participants who have taken part in or signed up to participate in these important discussions.

Also this week, six-time Olympic medalist and international track and field legend Jackie Joyner-Kersee visited NIU and DeKalb to speak with various student, campus and community groups. What a great opportunity to hear her inspirational story and learn the value of perseverance.

If you’re not already planning to attend, I encourage you to stop by the Convocation Center Saturday for NIU’s annual STEMfest event, which celebrates innovations in science, technology, engineering and math. It runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and offers a great opportunity for a family educational outing that is open to the public and free to all participants. Many hands-on exhibits from NIU faculty, staff and students are available to interest children and young people in the exciting STEM fields.

This event is just one example of the engagement activities NIU is involved with in this region. We hope the increased awareness of the critical role the STEM fields play in our everyday lives will inspire more young people to pursue careers in these fields.

GO HUSKIES!

“We have so many great resources and programs to offer transfer students here at NIU,” said Andrew Hlubek, associate director of admissions. “TGIF, like our Transfer Tuesday events, is great opportunities for students to meet face-to-face with our admissions counselors and take the next steps toward becoming a part of the Huskie family.”

TGIF events allow transfer student to learn about NIU’s 57 majors from representatives of all six undergraduate colleges.

Visitors also can meet academic advisers, financial aid counselors and staff from a myriad of NIU’s student support departments, including Housing and Dining, the Scholarship Office, Off-Campus & Non-Traditional Student Services, Military Student Services, the Honors Program, the Center for Access-Ability Resources, the Campus Child Care Center and more.

Both TGIF events are scheduled from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. with the Feb. 8 event taking place in the Altgeld Hall auditorium, and the March 22 event scheduled for the Holmes Student Center. Registration deadline for the Feb. 8 event is Tuesday, Feb. 5, and for the deadline for the March 22 event is Tuesday, March 19.

08-CHEM-TGIFDuring the events, NIU will waive the $40 application fee.  Students can bring their official transcripts for on-the-spot admissions decisions.

So much information about the NIU experience is available online, but a campus visit is the best way for students to get introduced to the university, Hlubek said.

“We focus on transition, and the TGIF events are chance for us to talk to transfer students about the issues that are most important to them,” Hlubek said. “We talk about transcripts, how credits will transfer, housing options, where to find veterans services. We understand transition at NIU, and we have the people and resources here to answer students’ questions immediately

NIU Alumni Association president, Francine Pepitone  and NIU Foundation chair, Dennis Barsema submitted the letter below to the Chicago Tribune in response to the Chicago Tribune’s Sunday article about NIU’s presidential search.

Dear Editors:

In your recent wrap-up article that re-hashes challenges NIU is facing concerning its physical plant and police employees, you imagine a potential classified ad for future presidential candidates who will follow John Peters’ 13-year tenure as president. As members of the presidential search committee and leaders of NIU’s Alumni Association and Foundation, allow us to help you draft the ad.

We seek a leader with vision, courage, entrepreneurial spirit and good Midwestern common sense who will be attracted to a great public university located in one of the most vibrant, dynamic regions of the state and nation, a university that has seen tremendous growth in key areas.

There is no question about it. NIU will attract many very qualified candidates interested in leading a public university proud of its many recent accomplishments:

  • Rapid growth in private support from alumni and friends that has grown from a total of $35 million in the 1990s to more than $190 million since the year 2000.
  • An alumni base of 225,000+ contributing $8 billion a year to the Illinois economy with engagement efforts that bring 25,000+ alumni in personal contact with their alma mater each year.
  • 50,000+ alumni in decision making positions working/living in the Chicago loop and a list of corporate partners that reads like a who’s who of the Chicago business community.
  • Four major building projects on campus that have been funded through private donations from proud alumni since 2000.
  • A brand-new, state-of-the-art, 1,008-bed residence hall that represents the best combination of living space, privacy, amenities, and technology anywhere in the nation.
  • A rapidly growing Honors program attracting record numbers of high-achieving students.
  • Internationally acclaimed and nationally celebrated faculty who are teachers, scientists and artists. More than 35 have been named Fulbright scholars.
  • Ranked in U.S. News and World Report’s elite “National Universities” category; third in Illinois in the magazine’s High School Counselor Rankings of National Universities.
  • Nationally accredited programs in business, engineering, nursing, visual and performing arts, and all teacher certification programs, among others that meet the highest standards of academic quality and rigor.
  • A major student-centered public research university serving a large, diverse, suburban and urban population located in the heart of northern Illinois, the most economically vibrant region in the state and the nation.
  • A top-notch athletics program that ranks with the best in the nation in graduation rates.
  • Oh, and the best college football team in Illinois.

Like any large institution, we have challenges we must address, and we are meeting those head-on. However, as the above indicates, we are confident that Northern Illinois University will have no difficulty in attracting top candidates to keep NIU moving forward.

Sincerely,

Francine Pepitone, President, NIU Alumni Association

Dennis Barsema, Chair, NIU Foundation

Coach Dave Doeren

Coach Dave Doeren

by Dave Doeren

After back-to-back victories on the road, I cannot tell you how excited our NIU football team is to be back at home this Saturday to take on the Minutemen from UMass in front of our fantastic fans at Huskie Stadium.

With our win at Western Michigan last weekend we improved to 5-0 in the MAC and 8-1 overall.  Our team is playing extremely well right now as we head into our final two home games of the season.

This week we earned national recognition by receiving Top 25 votes in both polls: 39 votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll and 12 votes in the Associated Press Poll. Our 13-game conference winning streak is the longest in the county and that is due in part to your support. These next two home games will be crucial for us to continue our success.

Consider this about NIU:

  • Second-longest home game winning streak in the country with 19 wins
  • Longest conference winning streak in the country (13)
  • NIU, Alabama and Oregon are the only FBS teams to win 17 of their last 18 games
  • Bowl-eligible for the fifth straight year
  • Over the last 10 years, NIU is the winningest program in the MAC and leads all FBS teams in the state of Illinois since 2002
  • Winningest team in the MAC this decade

Quarterback Jordan Lynch is having an amazing season and is the most productive quarterback in the country. He is the national leader in numerous categories and leads an offense that is ranked 11th in the country in total offense. Jordan is having a Heisman-caliber season, and we need your help in his campaign. Please spread the word about Jordan’s success–in email, Facebook, Twitter. The more he is talked about the better his chances are.

Lynch is:

  • #1 in the country in Total Offense (3,169)
  • #2 in the country in Rushing Yards (1,185)
  • #1 in the country in Touchdowns Responsible for (rushing and passing) with 32
  • More Rushing Yards than 40 FBS Teams
  • NCAA Record for Most Consecutive 100-Yard Rushing Games by a Quarterback with 7
  • #5 in the nation in Rushing Yards/Game (131.7)
  • #6 in the nation in Total Offense Yards/Game (352.2)
  • #1 in the MAC in Passing Efficiency (152.2)
  • #16 in the nation in Scoring (10 points/game)

Not only has Huskie football had great success on the field, but I am proud of our student-athletes’ performance in the classroom.  We rank fifth in the nation according to the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate (APR), right behind schools like Northwestern, Boise State, Duke and Ohio State.  Our Graduation Success Rate (GSR) is at an all-time high of 83 percent – second best in the MAC and 16th nationally among Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) schools.

Recently, senior noseguard Nabal Jefferson was named one of 15 recipients of the 2012 National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Award.  Nabal is the second Huskie player to win the award in as many years, following 2011 quarterback Chandler Harnish , making NIU the only school in the country to have a player honored in both years.

You should be very proud of the Huskie football team and everything these student-athletes are accomplishing. We need your continuing support to make Huskie Stadium a true home-field advantage and very difficult place for opponents to play.  I invite you to come to the game and support our team.  Your support will help us in our goal to win the MAC West and go back to Detroit for the MAC Championship for a third straight year. We ask you to bring your friends, family and coworkers and spread the word to students to come to Huskie Stadium Saturday at 2:30 PM to watch one of the best teams in the country take on the University of Massachusetts!

Go Huskies!

Dave Doeren is head football coach at Northern Illinois University.

Official logo of Northern Illinois University (NIU)

The DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s office issued a news release late Monday afternoon stating that the office is closely monitoring the investigation of alleged misconduct at Northern Illinois University. “The integrity and transparency of this public institution of higher learning must be maintained,” the State’s Attorney’s statement said. “To that end, the DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office will seek the assistance of any agency, state or federal, to ensure that the investigation into these allegations is fair and complete.”

The university did not receive a copy of the State’s Attorney’s statement and was not aware of it until contacted by Daily Chronicle after 5:30 p.m. Monday. The university provided the Daily Chronicle with the following statement shortly after 8:00 p.m. Monday:

We welcome the continued involvement of DeKalb County States’ Attorney Clay Campbell in the ongoing investigation of the allegations regarding the existence of an NIU coffee fund account. Mr. Campbell’s office has been kept appraised of the investigation by NIU law enforcement, as his (Mr. Campbell’s) cooperation and assistance has been essential to proceed with the investigation. After all, the investigation itself was initiated by the university within less than two hours of receiving the allegations.

The integrity of this great university is not at issue. For over 110 years, thousands upon thousands of students’ lives have been transformed as a result of the educational opportunities they received at NIU. NIU will not cease investigating this allegation or any further allegations that may arise until a thorough and complete investigation is performed, no matter where it leads.

Right now, an investigation is underway by law enforcement into allegations of the existence of a coffee fund — these allegations are unproven and unsubstantiated until law enforcement concludes its investigation.

This university was built on values including integrity, fairness, due process and equality of opportunity. We remain patient and will continue to resist a “rush to judgment” until the investigation is complete.

The university’s statement was not included in today’s online or print editions.

A pension reform plan outlined Thursday by House Speaker Michael Madigan would shift costs to universities, reduce cost-of-living-adjustments in retirement and offer a choice between accepting the lesser, Tier II cost-of-living-adjustment (COLA) with access to the state’s retiree health care plan or maintaining the current COLA with a freeze on pay raises counting toward future pension benefits and no access to the state’s retiree health care plan.

Higher education representatives – including those at Northern Illinois University – met today with Gov. Pat Quinn’s pension working group to explain the effect potential pension changes will have on the quality of higher education in the state of Illinois and on retention and attraction of qualified educators and administrators to state universities.

NIU has reiterated to state lawmakers its position that an acceptable pension stabilization plan should provide:

  • A fair and equitable distribution of the pension obligation;
  • A transition period that allows employees and the university to adjust to new rules;
  • Future financial sustainability for all parties involved;
  • A credible promise of retirement security for employees; and
  • A retirement package attractive enough that it will not hinder the ability to recruit and retain staff and faculty.

At this point, pension changes are not expected to include an increase in the retirement age to 67 or an increase in employee contributions to the retirement systems. Speaker Madigan has indicated that a vote of both houses is likely prior to May 31.

As this critical phase of pension discussions unfolds, updates will be posted to NIU’s State Pension & Budget Update website in addition to NIU Today.
