College of Engineering & Engineering Technology studentsThe College of Engineering & Engineering Technology (CEET) is celebrating National Engineers Week with a variety of events for all ages.

The annual College Bowl, where the best and the brightest engineering and engineering technology students test their knowledge while they compete for valuable prizes, is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 23.

NIU students, faculty, staff and alumni are encouraged to join the fun and watch these students battle it out.

Omar Ghrayeb, associate dean of the College of Engineering & Engineering Technology, said the College Bowl offers CEET students a great opportunity. “Our College Bowl recognizes the great accomplishments of our current students and showcases their ability to become successful engineers,” Ghrayeb said.

The College Bowl begins at 3:30 in Room 354 of the Engineering Building. The finals will begin promptly at 5:30 p.m. with a banquet and dinner immediately following.  Because of space restraints, dinner guests should register by Tuesday, Feb. 15. For information, contact the associate dean’s office at (815) 753-1442.

Following dinner, a representative from British Petroleum will discuss the engineering and technology used in the oil exploration and development industry in the Gulf of Mexico.

Young student at CEET campIn addition to Wednesday’s events, CEET will host almost 250 area middle and high school students Tuesday, Feb. 22.

These students will participate in hands-on activities, watch experiments performed by faculty and NIU students, listen to presentations and tour the engineering laboratories. Thanks to great popularity, registration is currently closed for this event. However, the college is currently scheduling several open houses for people and schools interested in showcasing engineering professions.

For more information, contact David Grady at (815) 753-0745.

“CEET, along with many professionals in the field, believes that our kids should be exposed to engineering and other STEM fields at an early age,” Ghrayeb said. “By inviting schools to visit us, more children are exposed to the exciting career opportunities awaiting them in the real world.”

Engineers Week celebrates engineering professions by showcasing the vast of array of careers available to engineering and engineering technology graduates.

The National Engineers Week Foundation, a formal coalition of more than 100 professional societies, major corporations and government agencies, is dedicated to ensuring a diverse and well-educated future engineering workforce by increasing understanding of, and interest in, engineering and technology careers among young students and by promoting pre-college literacy in math and science.

Engineers Week at NIU is just one of the many events supported by NIU STEM Outreach.

NIU’s STEM Outreach delivers off-campus programs and on-campus activities designed to increase science, technology, engineering and mathematics literacy and enthusiasm among P-12 students, their families and educators.

Photo of LGBTQ flagStudents who will be juniors or seniors at NIU for the 2011-2012 school year and have been active in LGBT organizations or activities might be eligible to apply to receive scholarships.

The Joseph Harry Endowed Scholarship Program provides tuition scholarships to undergraduate students who have participated in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) organizations or activities. Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of financial need, scholarly performance and academic standing.

All information about the scholarship, including full eligibility criteria, application requirements, and application form, is available online. The application deadline is 4:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, for scholarships to be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.
