The Illinois Nurses Foundation announced the 2023 40 under 40 Emerging Nurse Leaders Award winners which included NIU School of Nursing simulation laboratory coordinator Jessica Madrigal. The award was established in 2015 to highlight and celebrate young nurse leaders and celebrate those who are impacting health care and the nursing profession.
“By earning this award I truly felt recognized and honored for all that I do,” Madrigal said. “Not everyone understands the best practices in simulation and all that goes into it. I work hard to create the best experiences for our students.”
Madrigal earned her bachelor’s degree from NIU and master’s degree from Olivet Nazarene University. She joined NIU in 2016 as a medical surgical clinical instructor and is currently the Simulation Laboratory Coordinator.
“I truly appreciate being able to help the students learn how to critically think,” Madrigal said. “I am able to give them experiences that they would otherwise never have until they are actually a licensed professional. My goal is to help them become the best nurses, physical therapists, early childhood educators, speech language pathologists and nutritionists who have the clinical judgment skills to safely care for their patients.”
Kris Selig, clinical assistant professor and director of undergraduate studies for NIU School of Nursing, calls Madrigal a conscientious and hardworking professional who has worked tirelessly to bring innovation into the Simulation Program at NIU.
“Ms. Madrigal’s commitment to the community, public, and nursing extends far beyond the present,” Selig said. “She embodies an ethic of responsibility that compels her to constantly, innovatively transform what is currently needed while simultaneously envisioning our future to create a better tomorrow.”
This year’s winners come from all over Illinois and work in various healthcare environments—public schools, university medical centers, colleges of nursing, children’s hospitals, ICUs, and more. No matter where they work or their official titles—these nursing leaders teach, heal, and inspire those around them daily. Their passion, skill, and knowledge advance health care and the nursing profession in their work environments and in their communities.
“I appreciate everyone who helps me create these simulation experiences for students.,” Madrigal said. “I could never do this alone! From my amazing Laboratory Specialist Nicole Fitzpatrick, all of my graduate assistants, and clinical instructors. They all play a role in conducting high quality simulation.”
An event honoring the award winners was held in September.
