The Illinois Nurses Foundation announced the 2023 40 under 40 Emerging Nurse Leaders Award winners which included NIU School of Nursing simulation laboratory coordinator Jessica Madrigal. The award was established in 2015 to highlight and celebrate young nurse leaders and celebrate those who are impacting health care and the nursing profession.

“By earning this award I truly felt recognized and honored for all that I do,” Madrigal said. “Not everyone understands the best practices in simulation and all that goes into it. I work hard to create the best experiences for our students.”

Madrigal earned her bachelor’s degree from NIU and master’s degree from Olivet Nazarene University. She joined NIU in 2016 as a medical surgical clinical instructor and is currently the  Simulation Laboratory Coordinator.

“I truly appreciate being able to help the students learn how to critically think,” Madrigal said. “I am able to give them experiences that they would otherwise never have until they are actually a licensed professional. My goal is to help them become the best nurses, physical therapists, early childhood educators, speech language pathologists and nutritionists who have the clinical judgment skills to safely care for their patients.”

Kris Selig, clinical assistant professor and director of undergraduate studies for NIU School of Nursing, calls Madrigal a conscientious and hardworking professional who has worked tirelessly to bring innovation into the Simulation Program at NIU.

“Ms. Madrigal’s commitment to the community, public, and nursing extends far beyond the present,” Selig said. “She embodies an ethic of responsibility that compels her to constantly, innovatively transform what is currently needed while simultaneously envisioning our future to create a better tomorrow.”

This year’s winners come from all over Illinois and work in various healthcare environments—public schools, university medical centers, colleges of nursing, children’s hospitals, ICUs, and more. No matter where they work or their official titles—these nursing leaders teach, heal, and inspire those around them daily. Their passion, skill, and knowledge advance health care and the nursing profession  in their work environments and in their communities.

“I appreciate everyone who helps me create these simulation experiences for students.,” Madrigal said. “I could never do this alone! From my amazing Laboratory Specialist Nicole Fitzpatrick, all of my graduate assistants, and clinical instructors. They all play a role in conducting high quality simulation.”

An event honoring the award winners was held in September.

“I was looking forward to celebrating with classmates and folks I have not seen in many years,” Isabel said. “We celebrated where we were 50 years ago and where we are today. In my case it looks like that is not very far, but it is all the in between years that are rich with adventures.”

A favorite NIU memory for Isabel was seeing Gloria Steinem speak in the Duke Ellington Ballroom in the early 1970s.

“We couldn’t wait to see her because she was an innovator and a powerful, strong woman,” Isabel said. “It was really something to see at that time.”

After graduating from NIU in 1973 with a bachelor’s degree in medical technology, Isabel joined the Peace Corps. She said the experience ignited a passion for world travel that she’s enjoyed throughout her career.

“From then on, I would get the itch to embark on a new travel adventure,” Isabel said. “My experiences and expertise led me to wonderful consulting opportunities all over the world. I love teaching medical technology procedures to young people in other lands.”

She went on to earn a master’s degree and doctoral degree from NIU. Combining her love of teaching and passion for travel, Isabel started a study abroad program to Belize where she travels with Huskies to observe how health care is delivered overseas.

“I am proud of my education, the people I have worked with, and all the encouragement and support I have received through the years,” Isabel said.

Over the course of her three-decade career at NIU, she’s been an instructor, professor, mentor and is currently the chair of the School of Health Studies. Dean Kelly Fiala said the College of Health and Human Sciences is fortunate to have Isabel on the team.

“Jeanne cares so deeply about the students, faculty, and staff and is someone I have quickly come to rely on,” Fiala said. “She is a Golden Huskie in every sense.”

Isabel said she is fortunate to be a Huskie.

“NIU has so much to offer, and the network of friends and colleagues I have made are priceless,” Isabel said. “I am grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with folks and work with so many outstanding students.”

Isabel’s advice to NIU students is simple: take advantage of the many opportunities that are here for you.

“Welcome opportunities, never underestimate your abilities, have faith and don’t be afraid of new experiences,” Isabel said.

When she isn’t working, the mom of Chris, 37, and Marc, 33, enjoys volunteering, serving on various boards and of course, taking in a Huskie football game as a season ticket holder.

NIU’s research, service and engagement enterprises are on a serious roll, as external funding in Fiscal Year 2023 surged.

During that fiscal year, faculty and staff secured about 400 awards totaling $57 million in funding from outside sources, an increase of 34% over the previous year and a 60% increase since FY 2019. That FY23 figure does not include another $4 million in awards for COVID-19 relief funding.

“This is an outstanding record of achievement that speaks to a lot of hard work and the high level of expertise among our faculty and staff,” said Yvonne Harris, NIU vice president of the Division of Research and Innovation Partnerships.

NIU is recognized nationally as a leading Emerging Research Institution and among Carnegie-classified R2 universities for “high research activity.” More than 50% of the external funding in FY23 came from federal agencies, while another 40% came from the State of Illinois.

“External funding is at a 10-year high or better,” said Dara Little, associate vice president for research and executive director of NIU Sponsored Programs Administration (SPA). Little’s office provides FY23 details in its Annual Report.

“Included in this year’s funding are federal investments in university infrastructure to enable cutting-edge research and education, public programming to deliver social and educational services across the region, and a highly competitive research CAREER award,” Little said.

The National Science Foundation CAREER award went to Biology Professor Jennifer Koop. Koop is receiving $1.2 million over five years to advance her studies into why some species, particularly parasites, are successful at invading new habitats. NSF’s CAREER program provides support to early-career faculty who have the potential to serve as academic role models in research and education and to lead advances in the mission of their department or organization.

“NIU faculty members have a strong tradition of competing for and winning these prestigious awards,” Little said.

Funding specifically for NIU research reached $16.2 million, also a 10-year-high or better. Among the other NIU research projects funded in FY23:

Additionally, NIU received $7 million in outside funding for instructional programs, including a $5.1 million award over five years to train school psychologists and funding for NIU’s Early Childhood Access Consortium for Equity Program. University faculty and staff also attracted $37 million in funding for public service projects. “We’ve seen growth in this area, mostly from partnerships with the State of Illinois,” Little said. Among the public service projects:

“All of these programs and more advance the academic and research mission of the university,” Harris said. “They provide opportunities for our students to work alongside faculty in the lab, field and classroom as we train the next generation of leaders.”
