PI Academy plans Dec. 7 talk on grant-writing, mastering NSF Broader Impacts review criteria

November 19, 2012

Logo of the National Science Foundation (NSF)J. Britt Holbrook, assistant director of the Center for Study of Interdisciplinarity at North Texas University, will visit campus Friday, Dec. 7, as a guest of the PI Academy.

Holbrook will speak from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on “Taking a Proactionary Approach to Grant-Writing, Peer Review and Broader Impacts.” The talk will take place in the Sky Room of the Holmes Student Center.

As the foremost authority in the country on the revised National Science Foundation Broader Impacts criteria, Holbrook will speak broadly to issues of effective grant-writing and understanding peer review processes at the NSF as well as at other major funding agencies.

When members of Congress wrote the America COMPETES Reauthorization Act of 2010 – signed into law in 2011, it provided re-authorization for the NSF – they specifically addressed the Broader Impacts review criterion.

The act stipulates that the NSF shall apply the review criterion to achieve an array of societal goals and develop policies related to strategies and approaches employed to address the Broader Impacts criterion.

Those include assessment and evaluation; institutional engagement in assisting investigators with activities associated with addressing broader impacts; and training to ensure NSF staff, merit review panels and potential NSF-supported investigators understand these new policies.
