NIU’s significant contributions to the community, state and beyond were officially acknowledged by the U.S. Congress on Oct. 30.
“This year, NIU celebrates its 125th anniversary,” said U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly, an NIU alumna. “I ask that this congratulatory message be read into the Congressional Record in honor of this significant milestone.”
Kelly read the proclamation, signed by all members of the Illinois congressional delegation, praising NIU’s growth from a teacher’s school in 1895 to a world-class, research-focused public institution that attracts students from across Illinois, the country and the world.
“Nearly 250,000 alumni in the northern Illinois region and around the world are making a difference in their chosen fields,” Kelly said. “The impact of this outstanding institution has earned the respect and attention of a grateful state and nation. As a proud alumna, I am honored to join my colleagues to congratulate Northern Illinois University on this, its 125th anniversary.”
We are grateful to have supportive alumni like Congresswoman Kelly, and thank all members of the Illinois congressional delegation for their recognition of our proud history,” said Matt Streb, Chief of Staff to President Freeman and co-chair of the 125th anniversary committee.
