IISE wins Most Innovative Chapter Event award

July 22, 2020

Huskies never quit and neither do engineering students. That’s why it’s no surprise that the NIU student chapter of the Institute of Industrial Systems Engineers (IISE) earned the national IISE award for Most Innovative Chapter Event in 2019.

The chapter hosted by NIU’s College of Engineering and Engineering Technology (CEET) held several events in 2019 including a volunteer event at Feed My Starving Children, participation in the university’s STEMFest, plus they organized a student versus faculty basketball game, and raised money with t-shirt sales.

They stayed focused on their goal of “strengthening the bond between undergraduate, graduate students and faculty through volunteering events, general meetings, and untraditional networking events,” as their report laid out, and as a result they were able to grow their chapter by 20 new members.

“This award is an example of how resourceful and ambitious our students are,” said CEET Dean Donald Peterson, Ph.D. “We are so proud of how they’ve been able to achieve their goals.”

This chapter is not new to awards; they won the gold award for two consecutive years in 2017 and 2018, said faculty advisor Shi-Jie (Gary) Chen, Ph.D. and professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering.

IISE judges and awards using several factors that include the quality of programs, membership growth and retention, participation in volunteer leadership development, student chapter support, and strategic planning.

IISE attended STEMfest to introduce elementary students to STEM subjects.

The chapter had to submit a report to IISE that summarized its activities, engagement, retention, and recruitment strategies. NIU’s chapter was selected for its innovative and successfully implemented events.
