Webinar to discuss leadership during financial crisis

NIU public administration faculty will be among the featured presenters during an upcoming webinar that will focus on providing leadership during financial crisis.

The webinar will be held at noon Friday, June 5, and will feature Professor Kurt Thurmaier, chair of the NIU Department of Public Administration; NIU Public Administration Professor Christopher Goodman; and Michael Van Milligen, city manager of the City of Dubuque.

During economic recession, local government officials feel pressure to react swiftly. At the same time, they are looking to make good decisions with accurate information, and to make those decisions quickly.

“Sometimes, reactions are based on cutback budgeting habits instead of careful management of the current or expected budget deficit,” says Nancy Ouedraogo, community and economic development specialist for the University of Illinois Extension, which is among the webinar hosts.

This presentation will suggest three points to guide cutback budgeting using research from previous recessions: leadership and management of cutback budgeting decisions, framing cutback discussions, and thinking about immediate and long-term strategies. The webinar will also include an update on legislative issues and federal funding from the Illinois Association of County Boards.

Other hosts of the webinar include the NIU School of Public and Global Affairs, the NIU Center for Governmental Studies, the Illinois City/County Management Association, and the Illinois Association of County Board Members.
