Free food, music and fun headline the official 125th Anniversary Kick-Off this Thursday beginning at 3 p.m. in the Holmes Student Center. Supervisors are encouraged to allow release time for employees to attend the event.
The event starts in the Gallery Lounge on the main floor where attendees can enjoy food, drink and music, and view panels from an historic exhibit while mingling with the likes of Mission, Mini-Mish and Victor E. Huskie. A photo booth in nearby Duke Ellington Ballroom will provide interested attendees with a personal remembrance of the celebration.
At 4 p.m., the action moves everyone to the Ballroom with the help of the Pep Band and Silverettes. After brief remarks from President Lisa Freeman, Student Senate Speaker Ian Pearson and Alumni Association President Pete Garrity, the NIU Choir and the Black Choir will perform.
Beginning at 5 p.m., vendors on the newly-remodeled lower level will offer free and reduced-cost food and drinks. Starbucks will provide special red and black drinks for $1.25; the Huskie Den will offer free popcorn and half-off Huskie burgers; and the Depot will provide free red and black Rice Krispy treats. CAB will also provide entertainment from 5 – 7 p.m. on the Huskie Den stage, and a caricaturist from 5:30 – 6:30 in the OASIS area. Anniversary-branded items will be available in the bookstore.
“We wanted the kick-off event to be casual and low-key but also worthy of our anniversary’s first official event,” said Chief of Staff Matt Streb, chair of the 125th Anniversary Committee.
“There’s something for everyone between 3:00 and 7:00 p.m., so we hope people will feel free to stop by, join the fun, and celebrate our great history.”
