Nursing alumna earns honor at Stanford Hospital

Julie Richards, RN, MS, MSN, FNP-BC, WHNP-BC, CTH ™, F-ATHNA

Julie Richards, NP, ’85, B.S. in Nursing, has been named the 2019 Stanford Hospital and Clinics Advanced Practice Provider of the Year.

Richards, is a nurse practitioner for Student Health and Travel Medicine at the Vaden Health Center Stanford University, Sanford, California. In naming her, the AAP committee stated:

“Julie is regarded by her peers as an expert in student health and travel medicine. She not only provides excellent care to her patients, but serves as a clinical resource and mentor to RNs, APPs, and physician colleagues.”

Richards was also recognized for her institutional and community leadership with contributions and consultations across multiple university departments and programs.

Her professional reach extends beyond Stanford University; she has served on the International Society of Travel Medicine’s Student Travel Abroad Interest Group and is the acting chair, she helped initiate the first international research project on student travelers with the International Society of Travel Medicine and the Centers of Disease Control. Julie is a charter fellow and past resident of the American Travel Health Nurse Association, where she served on the Board of Directors for 8 years and has worked with American Nurses Association over the past 7 years to achieve specialty recognition for Travel Health Nursing. As part of this effort, Julie and her ATHNA team authored the scope and standards of practice for travel health nursing with the corresponding competencies as well as a code of ethics detailing the unique role and requirements of an APP in travel health nursing.
