Michael Kushnick has been named associate dean for academic affairs for the NIU College of Health and Human Sciences (CHHS).

Kushnick comes to NIU from Sioux City, Iowa, where he was the chair for the Department of Applied Health and Exercise Sciences at Briar Cliff University. His academic career includes roles at Ohio University, where he was the chair of the Department of Interdisciplinary Health Studies. He holds a Ph.D. degree in exercise physiology from Florida State University, an M.S. degree in exercise physiology from University of Louisville and a B.S. degree in human Biology from Chadron State College, Nebraska.
While at Briar Cliff University, he infused science into the curriculum of the programs within the department he chaired, promoted an online B.S. degree in the health sciences degree-completion program, and reorganized the baccalaureate degrees in radiologic technology, human performance and exercise physiology, as well as the M.S. degree in exercise physiology. Additionally, he brings considerable research, grant and mentoring experience, and has published research on topics related to exercise and lifestyle factors with a focus on battling chronic diseases.
“Dr. Kushnick has strong experiences and skills in curriculum, accreditation, student engagement and research. We are delighted that he is starting as associate dean in the College of Health and Human Sciences,” said CHHS Dean Derryl Block.
Among his responsibilities as associate dean, Kushnick will chair the college’s curriculum committee, oversee the college’s undergraduate advising office, chair the college’s assessment committee and serve as dean in the dean’s absence.
“It is great to be part of this team. I’m excited to facilitate growth within the college and university and help this great group of folks accomplish even more in the years to come,” Kushnick said.
