Employee Assistance Program and Training Center has you covered

February 18, 2019

Whoever said nothing in life is free isn’t familiar with an NIU perk that’s available right here on campus.

For nearly three decades, the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and Training Center has been a source of support to NIU employees, their families and retirees of the university – all at no cost.

“We encourage employees to work on sustaining a healthier lifestyle by offering hands-on health and wellness programs, professional and personal development programs and educational support through our training services,” Karen Smith, service specialist, EAP and Training Center, said. “Knowing the campus culture, policies, and resources is a huge advantage to employees as well as to the university.”

Lesley Gilbert, assistant director for the EAP and Training Center, shared the sentiment, adding that when employees are struggling with work-life balance, NIU is ready to help. Services include individual counseling, employee coaching and supervisor training. In addition, the EAP offers a variety of health and wellness presentations and opportunities like departmental training and career and educational advancement sessions.

“It’s an important service due to the flexibility of being located on campus,” Smith said. “This allows easy access for all our employees – including those at satellite campuses – to receive immediate timely assistance.”

Services rendered from Employee Assistance Program and Training Center remain confidential and are not shared with and any university department or outside service without a signed consent.

“We hope that faculty, staff, retirees and dependents who take part feel welcomed in a safe, secure and confidential environment,” Gilbert said. “They will be treated with dignity, respect and fairness and offered the support and assistance needed to help them resolve their concerns.
