Learn about local life at Campus Meets Community

September 5, 2018

NIU students, faculty and staff can learn about area businesses and discover local resources at the first-ever Campus Meets Community event Tuesday, Sept. 11, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Martin Luther King Commons. More than 40 local businesses and organizations affiliated with the DeKalb, Sycamore and Genoa Area Chambers of Commerce are taking part in this new communiversity block party.

Restaurants, retailers, medical providers, automotive businesses, banks, technology repair, nonprofit organizations, government offices and others will be on hand to introduce their products and services and welcome students, faculty and staff to the community. Attendees will enjoy a friendly community atmosphere as they connect with business and service organizations and sample local treats such as apple cider donuts, stuffed cookies, pizza and more.

Campus Meets Community is a new collaborative effort between NIU and the business community to build bridges between the university and the surrounding area. Campus Meets Community is a free event and is open to the entire NIU campus. In case of rain or inclement weather, Campus Meets Community will be held inside the Duke Ellington Ballroom at the Holmes Student Center.

Students who would like to utilize the experience to practice their active listening skills can also participate in “The Lost Art of Good Networking: The Importance of Active Listening,” a Jobs PLUS event. Students can register for Jobs PLUS online.
