Do you ever wonder how you can have a voice in what is going on at NIU? Our shared governance system is a great way to share ideas, get a broader understanding of the university and be an agent of positive change.
There are shared governance councils for each stakeholder group at NIU: Faculty Senate, the Operating Staff Council (OSC), the Supportive Professional Staff Council (SPSC) and the Student Association.
University Council is chaired by the president and includes voting members from each stakeholder group and nonvoting participants from NIU’s administration. There are also numerous committees of the university to participate in.
It is election season for OSC, SPSC and the Student Association which are looking for candidates for membership who are passionate, thoughtful and want to help move NIU forward. No previous council or committee experience is necessary.
If you would like to run for OSC membership, candidate interest forms are available online and are due Friday, April 6. Nominations for SPS Council can be made online beginning on Wednesday, March 14 until Friday, March 23.
After candidates are established, official elections will be held. Exercising your right to vote is vital in order to have a say in who represents you in shared governance.
Operating Staff Council election (open to all status civil service employees): Friday, April 13 – Sunday, May 6
SPS Council election (open to all SPS employees): Friday, April 9 – Friday, April 16
Student Association election (open to all students with a valid ZID): 9 a.m. Tuesday, March 27, 6 p.m. and Wednesday, March 28, on Huskie Link.
Be on the lookout later this semester in the weekly announcements for calls for participants in other committees of the university.
