More members of the NIU community came together than ever before to show their support for NIU students during the NIU Foundation’s most recent Giving Tuesday campaign. More than 300 donors participated, with annual gifts totaling nearly $95,000.
“We’ve seen steady growth with our Giving Tuesday campaign,” said Michael Adzovic, director of the Northern Fund. “This was our fourth year participating.”
In 2014, NIU’s first year participating in Giving Tuesday, 157 donors contributed $35,000.
This year’s Giving Tuesday campaign was highlighted by a $25,000 gift by Acting President Lisa Freeman and her husband, Doug Rose.
“We would be excited to make this gift any day of the year, but we hope that by doing so on Giving Tuesday that we can encourage and inspire others to give,” Freeman said. “We view this as a demonstration of how much we believe in our students and this institution.”
The NIU Foundation’s fundraising focus this year is student scholarships. The need for flexible dollars to attract and retain students has increased with fervor over the past several years. Ninety-four percent of NIU undergraduates have an unmet financial need after federal, state and institutional aids are applied.
Other highlights of this year’s Giving Tuesday efforts included a video campaign demonstrating the impact that scholarships have on NIU students. Thirty scholarship recipients shared stories of how they have benefited from the support of NIU donors and expressed their gratitude for the donors who have invested in their educational experience.
The NIU Foundation thanks all members of the NIU community, including faculty, staff, alumni and donors who invested in NIU students by participating in Giving Tuesday.
