The following faculty and staff profile is one in a series of stories that will appear in NIU Today highlighting NIU employees who support students through the NIU Foundation. The NIU Foundation invites all faculty and staff to come together with the entire Huskie family and consider supporting student scholarships by making a gift on #GivingTuesday, Nov. 28.
If you have been working at NIU for a while, chances are pretty good you have run into Carlos Raices. The Marine Corps veteran has worked for NIU’s Building Services since 2001 and is the acting supervisor of building services at the Holmes Student Center. He has also been a part of NIU’s shared-governance system through the Operating Staff Council.
One of Raices’ most distinguishable characteristics is his noticeable love for the NIU community, stemming from his early days working at Stevenson Towers South. “NIU has given me the opportunity to meet wonderful students, staff and faculty. The people are amazing. One of my favorite memories is when, at the end of my time at Stevenson, a community adviser and all the residents presented me with a group photo and card,” Raices said. “It made me feel like my work was appreciated and that I wasn’t taken for granted. NIU feels like family. The students make you feel like they are your kids … you want to take care of them.”
Raices’ love for NIU students grew to the point that eight years ago, he decided to start making a payroll deduction contribution to a student scholarship through the NIU Foundation.
“It gives students a peace of mind knowing that we are helping them. It gives me a peace of mind, too. NIU has given me so much. I wanted to give a little bit back,” Raices said. “Helping students any way I can just made me feel that much better about what I do here. I give a little bit through my earnings each pay period, and I don’t even notice it coming out of my paycheck. If you are thinking about supporting students through the NIU Foundation, do it! Every little bit helps.”
The NIU Foundation is currently in an initiative to raise unrestricted scholarship dollars to provide funding for NIU’s hardworking, talented and grateful students. You can join Raices in supporting student scholarships by making a gift to the NIU Foundation on #GivingTuesday, Nov. 28.
