Last week, the NIU Student Association (SA) unveiled a mural in the Holmes Student Center outside the Center Cafe to commemorate their #OneLoveNIU campaign. The mural features images that were gathered through the campaign.
#OneLoveNIU launched after the November election, spearheaded by Student Association Director of Student Life Anthony Williams II, “to generate positive content and posts about people or aspects that we all appreciate about NIU in regards to diversity and inclusion in a time when we needed it most.”
The SA encouraged members of the NIU community to share pictures and social posts about who and what they love about the NIU community and include the hashtag #OneLoveNIU and a picture of a heart. Students and employees also chalked the campus – especially on Valentine’s Day – with positive messages about love and spreading positive vibes to one another.
Williams worked closely with Sophia Varcados and Diane Lyang, graphic designers in the Office of University Marketing and Creative Services, to produce the mural.
“The real work goes far beyond social media,” said Williams. “But when we are actually embodying the principle of having an altruistic love for one another and promoting diversity in our classrooms and our academic departments, in our professors and staff, in our residence halls and our student government, in our sport teams and in our resource centers, but most importantly in the relationships with one another in this NIU community.”
“When we begin to love one another in spite of the various traits that differentiate us, then we can begin to master the simple art of living together.”
