AmeriCorps offers gap year opportunity in schools

February 7, 2017

The Office of Student Engagement and Experiential Learning (OSEEL) wants to inform NIU students of a program called City Year that provides a gap year opportunity for people from ages 18 to 25 interested in public service as an AmeriCorps member.

City Year partners with public schools in 28 U.S. cities to help students graduate from high school ready for college or a career. Their AmeriCorps members work in schools full-time, providing individualized support for students in grades 3 through 9 who are showing indicators of being off track towards high school graduation.

Benefits of serving a gap year with City Year include a $5,815 Education Award, access to more than 100 graduate school scholarship partnerships, and a biweekly stipend. You will spend a challenging year developing your leadership qualities, teamwork and soft skills to bridge you to a career or graduate school.

City Year’s next application deadline is Feb. 15. To apply, go to www.cityyear.org and click “Apply Now.” The written application should only take about 30 minutes to complete.

If you have any questions about City Year or the application process, please contact Katie Auger at kauger@cityyear.org or 312-216-7212.
