Faculty Development plans Teaching Effectiveness Institute

teaching-word-cloudNIU’s Faculty Development and Instructional Design Center will host the fall 2016 Teaching Effectiveness Institute Thursday, Aug. 11, and Friday, Aug. 12.

The institute is open to all NIU faculty, instructors and SPS and Civil Service staff. Participants can choose to attend either or both days of the Institute.

The registration deadline is Friday, Aug. 5.

Day One – Fundamental Principles of Effective Instruction – will introduce faculty to the basic principles of teaching, share information about teaching-related support resources available at NIU and discuss how faculty can address students’ learning needs. Topics include planning a syllabus, energizing the classroom, assessing student learning and more.

Registration for Aug. 11 is available online.

Day Two – The Art of Teaching: Using Performance Techniques in the Teaching/Learning Process – will be led by Greg Justice, professional speaker, director, actor, award winning teacher and professor in the School of Performing Arts at Virginia Tech. The Institute will include engaging activities to support development of teaching skills.

Topics include dealing with nervousness, improving your creativity through imagination, concentration, observation, relaxation, and more. Participants will learn techniques that they can apply immediately in their teaching.
