Diversity Summit scheduled April 27

pcsm-1The Presidential Commission on the Status of Minorities invites nominations of outstanding NIU students, faculty or staff members for the McKinley “Deacon” Davis Diversity Award.

Current students, faculty, SPS or Civil Service staff, as well as academic units, offices, programs or organizations, are welcome to make nominations for the awards that recognize significant contributions made to the improvement of the status of minorities on NIU’s campus.

Four awards will be given this year; one is specifically designated for a student. The extended nomination deadline for the McKinley “Deacon” Davis Diversity Award is Wednesday, April 20.

Award recipients will be honored Wednesday, April 27, at the PCSM diversity summit.

The diversity and inclusion summit, titled “Diversity: Men of Color on the NIU Campus and in the Community,” will focus on African American and Latino men. The summit is intended to bring together students, staff, faculty and members of the community to look at critical issues men of color face on the NIU campus and in community and to develop strategies to address issues of concern.

Jerlando F. L. Jackson, the Vilas Distinguished Professor of Higher Education and the director and chief research scientist of Wisconsin’s Equity and Inclusion Laboratory (Wei LAB) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is the key note speaker.

Formerly known as the Friendship Abloom Luncheon, the Diversity and Inclusion Summit will begin at 11:50 a.m. in the Duke Ellington Ballroom of the Holmes Student Center.

  • 1 p.m. Speaker Jerlando F.L. Jackson
  • 1:50 to 3:50 p.m. Diversity Roundtable Discussions on Men of Color on the NIU Campus and in Community
  • 4 to 6:30 p.m. Student panel with speaker and roundtable discussions on issues men of color face on the NIU campus and on the DeKalb community and solutions to address these concerns
