Transfer students invited to meet other transfers, share wisdom

April 13, 2016

transfer-2-transferStudents are invited from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, to attend the “Transfer 2 Transfer Tips” event in the North Fishbowl of the Stevenson (C/D) Tower.

Panel and small-group discussions are planned about the transfer experience and campus resources. Transfer students will share their experiences about their campus involvement and adjustment to NIU.

This is an excellent opportunity for new transfer students to meet other transfer students, and become acquainted with the resources available to them.

A social event will take place in the New Orleans game room in Stevenson; child care services will be provided from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Stevenson Sunset Room.

“Coming in as a transfer student is not as easy of a transition one might think. The hardest part for me personally was making friends. I lived on a typically ‘freshman’ floor where I was significantly older than many of my neighbors, so I did not have as much in common with them,” said Jessica McKay, who is now a community adviser.

“Getting involved was the best decision I ever made. Joining organizations such as the Student Association and the Softball Club my first year here gave me the confidence to be able to be the leader I am today.”

The event is directed toward helping transfer students engage and network with other transfer students and connect with faculty/staff. It is is part of Post-Trad Appreciation Week and is sponsored by Housing & Dinning, the Latino Resource Center, Military & Post-Traditional Student Services and the Office of Student Academic Success.
