J Mase III, a black/trans/queer poet based in New York City, will visit the NIU campus to deliver a spoken word performance at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, in the Cavan Auditorium of Gabel Hall.

As an educator, he has worked with thousands of community members in the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada on the needs of LGBTQIA youth and adults in spaces such as K-12 schools, universities, faith communities and restricted-care facilities.

He also is the founder of awQward, the first-ever talent agency specifically for trans- and queer-people of color.

Wednesday’s performance, which will demonstrate the power of using your voice, also will feature Vita E.

One day later, the NIU Gender & Sexuality Resource Center will host a Transgender Day of Remembrance at 5:15 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19.

The candlelight vigil at the Arndt House (on the corner of Normal Road and West Lincoln Highway) remembers those who have been lost and honors their memory. An open discussion and reception will follow.
