College of Law named among nation’s top schools for value

October 9, 2015

Best Value Law School 2015The NIU College of Law is again ranked among the top law schools in the nation based on value by the National Jurist magazine.

As part of its 2015 Best Value Law Schools study, NIU Law was named among the top 64 schools featured on the list, receiving an A- as the overall rating by the magazine. A complete list of the Best Value Law Schools appears in the October print issue of National Jurist magazine.

NIU Law was named to the list based on employment, tuition, cost of living and indebtedness upon graduation, with employment noted as the most important factor in the rankings.

“NIU Law continues to be at the forefront of addressing the important concern of affordability of legal education and reduction of law school debt, while still providing an excellent legal education,” NIU Law Dean Mark Cordes said.

As the only public law school in the Chicago area, NIU Law allows students to obtain their juris doctor degrees without the weight of incurring as large a debt at the end of their legal education. The average indebtedness of NIU Law students from the Class of 2013 was just more than $76,000 – 13 percent less than the $88,000 average student debt for 2013 public law school graduates.

As the only public law school in Northern Illinois, NIU Law has been named a top law school nationally for diversity, value and careers in public interest/government service.

NIU Law provides unique opportunities for its students, beginning with its highly accomplished faculty who are personally invested in the success of every student throughout their professional lives. Many alumni serve as public interest attorneys, prosecutors, defenders, elected officials and judges, but graduates are equally prepared for careers as solo practitioners or lawyers in multinational law firms.
