Police: NIU not target of social media threat

Photo of a police badge for a detectiveOn Friday, Sept. 25, 2015, NIU police received information about an inflammatory posting on social media that was suspected to be against NIU students. The social media post contained a screen shot of threatening language that was circulated through Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

NIU Police conducted an investigation that revealed the social media posting was related to an incident at Northern High School in Durham, N.C., and has no connection to Northern Illinois University students, faculty, staff and the DeKalb campus.

At this time, there is no imminent threat to the safety of the campus or surrounding community resulting from this incident. Durham Police in North Carolina are investigating the incident.
