John Heckmann Jr. named VP for facilities management

Watering the flowersJohn V. Heckmann Jr. has been named associate vice president for Facilities Management and Campus Services, effective Sept. 1.

Heckmann reports to Vice President of Administration and Finance Alan D. Phillips, and will be responsible for management of the physical plant, Building Services, Grounds, Materials Management and other key campus facilities and services.

“John brings to NIU more than 28 years of experience in the federal government where he served in a variety of senior facilities management and operations positions,” Phillips said. “His extensive background in overseeing resource distribution and management for Department of Defense facilities worldwide has provided him with a diverse skill-set that is well-suited for new role at the university.”

Heckmann’s years of experience in facility and utility service for the armed services has spanned across several continents, including destinations in Guam, Africa, Okinawa and Japan. Most recently, he was responsible for directing the oversight of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command delivery of products and services supporting Navy and Marine Corps shore installation infrastructure across 91 installations worldwide.

Heckmann earned his bachelor’s degree in physics from Iowa State University, a master’s degree in construction management from the University of Washington, and is a professional engineer (PE).
