Northern Illinois University will observe a moment of reflection to honor the lives of five students lost in 2008 with the tolling of five bells at 3:06 p.m. on Feb. 14.
“The moment of reflection is an important opportunity to remember the events of Feb. 14, 2008, honoring the memory and spirit of our five cherished Huskies,” said NIU President Doug Baker. “As a community, we are determined to move forward together in honor of Gayle Dubowski, Catalina Garcia, Julianna Gehant, Ryanne Mace and Daniel Parmenter.”
Kelly Wesener Michael, associate vice president for Student Affairs and dean of students, shared the sentiment.
“The events of Feb. 14, 2008, are forever woven into the history of NIU,” Wesener Michael said. “This was not only a time of great loss, but also a moment when we, as a community, stood together with resolve and strength. It is important that we not only honor those we lost on that day, but also remember the resiliency of our community.”
The Peaceful Reflection Garden adjacent to Cole Hall serves as a constant reminder and tribute to the five students. In addition, the Forward, Together Forward Scholarship is awarded annually to honor the five Huskies lost on Feb. 14.
