The Northern Illinois University women’s soccer team wrapped up its regular season Thursday afternoon with a 2-0 defeat to Western Michigan at the WMU Soccer Complex.

The Huskies finish the season with a 6-10-3 overall record, with their 4-4-3 final record and 15 points in Mid-American Conference play, good enough to earn NIU a berth in the MAC Tournament for the third consecutive season under head coach John Ross.

The No. 7 seed Huskies will face No. 2 seed Miami on the road in Oxford, Ohio on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. NIU lost away to Miami earlier in the season by a 3-1 margin.

Two second-half goals by the Broncos downed the Huskies on Thursday, as a tremendous goal by Rachel Chaney found the top right corner of the net in the 62nd minute before Liz Abro scored a penalty kick for Western Michigan in the 79th minute.

In a game of few scoring chances, NIU failed to register a shot on goal while limiting Western Michigan to just four shots on target. The Broncos attempted 11 shots compared to four from the Huskies.

NIU’s best scoring chances came from Ashley Neubeck’s (Lindenhurst, Ill./Lakes Community) long-range effort in the first half and Gwen Sabo’s (Alton, Ill./Alton) corner kick in the final minutes that almost went directly in.
