Sophomore defender Alex Elias from the Northern Illinois University women’s soccer team was named to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District Women’s Soccer Second Team this week.
Elias (Phoenix, Ariz./Boulder Creek) is the first NIU women’s soccer player to earn this recognition since Lindsey Curnock in 2009. The sophomore Phoenix native owns a perfect 4.0 grade-point average while pursuing a major in mathematics.
NIU head coach John Ross congratulated Elias for her achievement and said he’s happy to see her commitment to being a well-rounded student-athlete be rewarded.
“We’re very happy of Alex and proud of her,” Ross said. “She pushes herself every day in the classroom and on the field, and this recognition is a great testament to how hard she works. With how successful she has been athletically and academically already, we know Alex will continue to earn awards for the rest of her career at NIU.”
Elias was one of just seven players from the Mid-American Conference to be named to the District 5 Academic All-District Team, which recognizes the best and brightest Division I women’s soccer players from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.
She also expressed her delight at being selected as one of the top women’s soccer student-athletes in the region.
“I am very thankful to be honored with this great achievement and to represent NIU,” said Elias, who also earned MAC All-Freshman selection last season and has played in all 19 games for NIU this campaign with 15 starts at center back and one goal to her credit. “It shows how important it is to be successful in the classroom as well as on the field.”
Elias and the Huskies enter the postseason Sunday, facing Miami in a MAC Tournament quarterfinal match at 1 p.m. ET (noon CT) in Oxford, Ohio.
