Hosted by the DeKalb and Northern Illinois University police departments and organized by New Hope Missionary Baptist Church Pastor Joe Mitchell, the inagural unity walk brought together city, university and community members in an effort to strengthen the community while building civility and respect.
Participants marched from the NIU School of Nursing building east on Ridge Drive, turning south on Bayfield Drive, then west on Hillcrest Drive before heading north on Normal Road back to the nursing building.
DeKalb Mayor John Rey, NIU President Doug Baker and NIU Student Association Vice President Raquel Chavez joined Mitchell in speaking at the event.
