NIU’s Broadband Development Group (BDG) has moved from the Division of Outreach, Engagement and Regional Development to the Division of Information Technology (DoIT).
Since 2007, the BDG and DoIT have worked closely to develop broadband networks for community anchor institutions like libraries, schools, public safety agencies, community colleges, and municipal governments throughout northern Illinois.
The move aligns the expertise of the BDG to develop regional fiber optics with DoIT hardware technology and services. It also positions NIU to continue to achieve higher efficiency in developing broadband network designs throughout Illinois and remain a leader in broadband development.
Vice President Anne Kaplan approved of the move.
“Network design and engineering teams from DoIT and BDG have been working collaboratively for years on the university’s many network and fiber projects,” Kaplan said. “Aligning them under a single unit provides efficiencies, maximizes synergies, and creates a stronger centralized team to maintain and grow our impact on broadband in Illinois.”
The group will continue to engage with the Division of Outreach, Engagement and Regional Development for grant and project-related initiatives and for research and development of applications designed for broadband networks.
