ACCESS ready to tutor students, boost academic success stories

August 27, 2014

TutorsACCESS, which provides students with opportunities to build academic skills and make academic adjustments, is geared up for the fall semester.

New this year is the reopening of a walk-in tutoring center at Grant South.

Meanwhile, in a partnership with Housing and Dining, the Grant South Lobby will be open for quiet study during the same hours that the tutoring center there is open. Computers are available, including one with a large monitor for group work, as well as printing and comfortable places to sit and complete homework. All NIU undergraduates are welcome.

ACCESS provides walk-in tutoring services, one-on-one tutoring services, study groups and supplemental instruction for some specific courses and other support services for students who require academic assistance to be successful in their chosen courses and majors.

For more information, call (815) 753-1141 or email access@niu.edu.

Supplemental Instruction

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an enhanced tutoring program which utilizes student tutors called SI Leaders as “model students.”

SI Leaders are student tutors assigned to particular courses which they have successfully completed in the past. They attend lectures and quizzes and tests with their students so that they can provide support in the context of the course. They hold scheduled SI group sessions and offer office hours for one-on-one study in the course. Courses with SI this semester are MATH 101, MATH 108, MATH 109, CHEM 110 and CHEM 210.

For questions about SI, call (815) 753-1141.

A+Program

The A+ program provides three professional reading specialists, known by some as “The Carols.” They provide one-on-one and group support for many issues, including ACCUPLACER prep for pre-nursing students, TAP prep for education majors and other concerns students might have with study strategies, test anxiety, reading effectiveness and more.

“The Carols” are available by appointment only.

Students can make an appointment by calling (815) 753-1141 or dropping by Williston 100. The Carols have limited time available, so students should apply as soon as they feel they need assistance.
