NIU’s African Student Alliance explains new name

August 25, 2014

African Student Alliance logoAfter three decades as the NIU African Student Association, the organization has changed its name to the African Student Alliance.

“I changed the name to ‘Alliance’ because I believe that it is a better fit for the organization,” said ASA President Yannick Koua, a CLCE major with a minor in black studies. “ ‘Association’ made us separated from others and that is not the purpose. Alliance is more so open handed and we are ready to work with others as an alliance of humanity.”

The first meeting of the fall semester is planned for 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, in the Stevenson multipurpose room.

All are welcome regardless of race, color or ethnicity.

“The primary purpose of African Student Alliance is to cultivate a community among students of African descent at Northern Illinois University while sharing African cultures and traditions,” Koua said. “African Student Alliance strives to spread cultural awareness throughout this institution and engage in community service through outreach programs.”
