Orientation Leaders

New to NIU? Get started on the right foot by learning the ins-and-outs of what it takes to be a successful Huskie during the New Student Orientation program.

The Orientation Office at NIU will begin hosting incoming freshmen, transfer students and their families for orientation June 11 through July 17. Additional orientation programs will be held Aug. 4 and 5.

The New Student Orientation program gives students and their families the necessary tools needed for a successful transition to NIU.

All traditionally admitted students must attend a one-day orientation program. During orientation, incoming Huskies will learn about resources and strategies to help them succeed at NIU. They will also meet with academic advisors, register for classes and begin to prepare for their first semester.

Students will be led through orientation by orientation leaders who will share their  experiences at NIU. Orientation leaders also spend time with new students in small groups to provide an environment where new students can meet each other and make connections.

Family members are also invited to attend orientation to discover the resources available to their student. Discussions will be held focusing on academic and student life, safety, student health, managing college costs and common transitional issues of new students.

The Orientation Office, along with numerous other units within the Division of Student Affairs & Enrollment Management and the academic colleges, work to ensure new students and their families have a positive day at NIU and look forward to the start of classes on Aug. 25.

Orientation leaders have been in training since February, preparing to welcome new students and family members into the NIU community. Orientation leaders undergo vigorous training with a focus on strengthening their communication, listening and facilitation skills.

The 2014 Orientation Leader staff is comprised of 10 undergraduate student leaders from various colleges sharing their unique experiences.
