Kids with homemade guitarsThe 2014 Bright Futures program – the Science of Music – is staging its grand finale Tuesday, June 10, at Hopkins Park Shelter prior to the first DeKalb Municipal Band concert of the season.

Sponsored by NIU STEM Outreach, DeKalb County libraries and the DeKalb Municipal Band, the Bright Futures Fair offers a night of free family fun with music, sound, science and technology.

Hundreds of children and parents throughout the area have learned about the science of music at hands-on events at the DeKalb, Cortland and Sycamore public libraries over the past several months. Children created instruments, made music, and learned scientific principles related to sound. More hands-on activities will start at 5:30 p.m. at the Hopkins Park Shelter, including:

  • Musical Tesla Coil
  • PVC Pipe Organ
  • Acoustic Art
  • Face Painting
  • Sno Cones
  • Electrocuted Hot Dogs

After the fair, families can stay for the opening concert of the DeKalb Municipal Band’s 160th season, starting at 7 p.m.
