Northern Illinois University redshirt junior Meghan Heuer (St. Charles, Ill./North) has been named the Mid-American Conference’s Women’s Track Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.

She becomes the first Huskie to win the award this year and the first NIU honoree since Janay Mitchell on March 21, 2012, to earn the weekly award.

“Our staff is extremely proud of Meghan earning the MAC Athlete of the Week award,” said NIU head coach Connie Teaberry. “Meghan has trained hard the entire season and receiving this honor is a testament to her work ethic. We look forward to Meghan continuing her accomplishments this weekend at the MAC Championships.”

Heuer set a new NIU record in the 800 meters Saturday at the Wisconsin Open, running 2:08.54 to claim first place in the event. She topped the previous school standard of 2:08.94 set in 2012 by Rebecca Cronin and beat her personal record by over a second.

NIU opens its postseason this weekend at the 2014 MAC Outdoor Championships in Athens, Ohio. The meet starts Thursday and runs through Saturday.
