NIU Police to train for active shooter scenario beginning May 12

Photo of a police badge for a detectiveThe NIU Department of Police and Public Safety will conduct rapid deployment and mobile field force training—including responding to a mock active shooter situation—in Grant Towers South from Monday, May 12, through Friday, May 23, and at Lincoln Hall Friday, May 30.

Instruction and simulations will take place from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m., utilizing the following areas in Grant South:

  • Lobby
  • Grant B-Tower
  • Grant A-B Formal Lounge

Training will culminate with a full scale exercise (FSE) involving NIU, state and local authorities in Lincoln Hall on May 30 involving a simulated multiple active shooter situation inside the residence hall with students. The FSE will include the NIU Police; City of DeKalb Police, DeKalb Fire and EMS; Sycamore Police; DeKalb County Sheriff; and Illinois State Police.

The May 30 simulation will run from from 8 a.m. – noon and will involve simulated radio traffic, a test of NIU’s emergency notification systems and use of the Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System (ILEAS).

Expect traffic delays adjacent to Lincoln Hall on Lucinda Ave., Annie Glidden Rd., Stadium Drive East and Lincoln Drive North.
