Members of the NIU community have a long tradition of participation in a variety of international activities. We have every reason to be proud of the accomplishments of our faculty, staff and students in the global arena.

However, to remain competitive as an institution with an international scope, we must build on synergies at NIU and with our international partners. We want to provide a welcoming academic and community environment for our international students and, in the spirit of Bold Futures, ensure all of our students have global perspectives to succeed in careers and a culturally diverse society.

We have assembled the Global NIU Strategic Planning Committee to draft goals and action items for moving forward. However, these plans are just the starting point. We want to involve everyone in the NIU community who is either active in international activities or who has an interest in becoming active in the Global NIU process to help to shape our goals and the strategies to accomplish them.

I invite you to participate in a Global NIU Summit from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, May 1, at Barsema Alumni and Visitors Center to learn more about the ideas generated by the Global NIU Strategic Planning Work Groups and to contribute your ideas.

The plan that results from the Global Summit will help focus our efforts over the next three years. Some of the initial concepts for goals developed by the Strategic Planning Committee are available for review. New ideas concerning goals and innovative ways to attain them will be welcome.

If you are interested in participating in the Global NIU Summit, please RSVP to Kathleen Carey in the Division of International Affairs by Friday, April 25.

Ray Alden is vice president for International Affairs at NIU.
