Academic advising, says Charlie Nutt, “is the very core of successful institutional efforts to educate and retain students.”

“For this reason, academic advising … should be viewed as the ‘hub of the wheel’ and not just one of the various isolated services provided for students,” adds McNutt, executive director of the National Academic Advising Association. “Academic advisers offer students the personal connection to the institution that is vital to student retention and student success.”

NIU could not agree more.

The Division of Academic Affairs and the Office of the Vice Provost will sponsor the first Academic Adviser Appreciation Reception, scheduled from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, in the Sky Room of the Holmes Student Center.

Remarks are planned at 3:30 p.m.

“We are very excited about this program because it gives the university community an opportunity to recognize and praise the work professional and faculty academic advisers do for our students across disciplines, majors and minors,” said Michelle Pickett, director of the Academic Advising Center and coordinator of the event.

NIU calls on all students to pledge their gratitude and say “thank you” to the academic advisers who have been instrumental in their pursuits of successful career paths. Students can submit “thank you” notes at advisorthankyou@niu.edu; include college, major, Z-ID number and a brief “thank you” statement to the adviser.
