Wanted: One million pop tabs for Ronald McDonald House

March 25, 2014

Ronald McDonald House Charities logoNIU Student Involvement & Leadership Development is asking the campus community to start collecting beverage can tabs as part of the Huskies Can Make a Difference campaign.

All tabs are donated to the Ronald McDonald House Charities, a non-profit organization that provides families with children in the hospital a low-cost place to stay, eat and recharge while their loved one is receiving the critical care that they need.

Help NIU reach its goal of collecting 1 million tabs for this cause.

The Ronald McDonald House Charities collect aluminum tabs to recycle the metal and use the proceeds to pay overhead costs, such as electricity, at each one of their “home-away-from-home” facilities.

During the 2012-2013 school year, more than 25 NIU departments, student organizations and individuals collected 116.8 pounds of pop tabs for Ronald McDonald House Charities, which is roughly equivalent to 150,200 tabs.

Students and others can deposit their collection of tabs in the red wooden boxes located at the New Hall Community Center and near the cardio rooms at the Student Recreation Center. Tabs also can be taken to the Student Involvement & Leadership Development office in Room 150 of the Campus Life Building.
