Softball’s Grable earns weekly MAC honor

Northern Illinois University softball player Kayti Grable became the second Huskie in as many weeks to be named Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week, the league announced today.

Grable had an impressive week at the plate as the Huskie freshman first baseman went 10-for-18 in 19 plate appearances. Her .556 batting average last week was well above her season average of .350. Grable tallied four multi-hit games and belted two home runs, including her first career round-tripper.

The Santee, Calif. native got the week off to a great start in a doubleheader with UMKC, driving in all the runs NIU scored in both games. She went 2-for-3, including a home run, and driving in the Huskies’ two runs in a 5-2 setback to UMKC. In Game Two, she went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a stolen base in a 2-1 loss to the Kangaroos.

Grable’s best performance of the week came in NIU’s 8-4 win over Jackson State in the opening game of the Jayhawk Invitational. She went 3-for-4, including two doubles and a run scored against the Lady Tigers. Grable was 1-for-3 with a walk in NIU’s 8-0 victory over Jackson State in the third game in Lawrence, Kan. Her lone hit was a solo home run. She concluded her week with a 2-for-3 showing in NIU’s 10-2 loss to Nebraska in the finale of the Jayhawk Invitational.

Grable joins Nicole Gremillion (Missouri City, Texas/Elkins) joins NIU pitcher Jessica Sturm (Wichita, Kan./Goddard) as the Huskies who have earned conference player of the week honors. Gremillion earned MAC West Player of the Week accolades Mar. 10 for her play at the Shocker Softball Classic. Sturm picked up MAC West Pitcher of the Week honors Feb. 24 for her performance in the Citrus Classic.

NIU returns to the diamond Sunday, March 30, when the Huskies travel to Ames, Iowa, to take on Iowa State in a doubleheader. First pitch for Game One is set for noon CT with the second game to follow.
