Lynch earns eighth MAC week honor of 2013

Northern Illinois University quarterback Jordan Lynch earned a his eighth Mid-American Conference West Offensive Player of the Week honor after leading NIU to a 33-14 victory over Western Michigan the league announced Monday.

Lynch’s eighth MAC West Offensive Player of the Week honor this year is a school record for league player of the week awards in a season, and is the 12th of his Huskie career. Lynch was also named a Manning Award Star of the Week. Fans can vote for Lynch as the Manning Award’s top performer of the week at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Facebook page.

The Chicago native broke his own NCAA record for rushing yards by a quarterback by tallying 321 yards on 27 carries for with three rushing touchdowns in the win over Western Michigan that capped a perfect 12-0 regular season. Lynch scored on touchdown runs of 29, 36 and 37 yards as he averaged 11.9 yards per carry.

On a cold, snowy and windy night, the Mt. Carmel product also hit Juwan Brescacin on a 10-yard touchdown pass as he totaled 360 yards of total offense on the night. Lynch singlehandedly outgained the Broncos, 360-256.

This is the fourth-straight league honor for Lynch this season.

Jordan Lynch for HeismanLynch rushed 161 yards on 28 carries and scored three second-half rushing touchdowns, and completed 17-of-22 passes for 202 yards at Toledo to help clinch the Huskies’ fourth consecutive West Division title and win his seventh MAC POTW honor of the season. He earned his sixth conference accolade after accounting for 468 yards of total offense against Ball State, rushing for 123 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries and passing for a season-high 345 yards. Lynch began the streak after rushing for a career-high four touchdowns and 119 yards and passing for 160 yards at UMass.

Lynch also picked up MAC West Offensive Player of the Week honors following performances at Iowa (8-31), vs. Eastern Illinois (9-21), at Purdue (9-28), at Central Michigan (10-19).

Five Huskies have garnered 14 MAC West Player of the Week honors this season.

In addition to Lynch, defensive tackle Ken Bishop picked up MAC West Defensive Player of the Week following his performances at Idaho and at UMass, while Tommylee Lewis earned offensive and special teams player of the week accolades following the Idaho and Purdue games respectively. Mathew Sims picked up his player of the week honor after hitting the game-winning field goal at Iowa in the season opener, while Cameron Stingily’s performance at Kent State gave him offensive player of the week honors.

The Huskies return to action Friday, Dec. 6, when NIU travels to Detroit to take on MAC East champion Bowling Green at Ford Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT and will be televised on ESPN2. Tickets are on sale now online or by calling 815-753-PACK (7225).
