NIU’s Office of Student Engagement and Experiential Learning is offering two TLC informational sessions at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, in Room 305 of the Holmes Student Center.

These sessions are open to all and will provide information on the Themed Learning Communities (TLC) program as well as the proposal process.

OSEEL is now accepting proposals for Fall 2014 TLCs. Forms for new TLCs and continuing TLCs are available. Proposals are due by the end of November.

A TLC consists of two or three courses where students are co-enrolled and explore a common theme across disciplines. Faculty members create assignments that require students to draw on concepts from the other TLC classes for an enhanced, integrative learning experience.

TLCs give students the opportunity to engage deeply with a course theme, connect learning across courses in collaborative and active ways, develop relationships with peers/faculty and ease the transition into college. Furthermore, research into the effectiveness of the TLCs at NIU clearly shows increased retention rates and GPAs among students who participate in these learning communities.
