Honorable Mentions has begun its second year since its re-launch as it continues to celebrate and laud the creative, academic, and extracurricular accomplishments and experiences of the University Honors community.
Honorable Mentions is a student-run publication, an omnibus of the University Honors community. Honorable Mentions offers an excellent opportunity for students to be published as undergraduates to a peer-reviewed publication.
Each issue centers on a theme that serves as a guiding framework but not a requirement, as creativity is welcomed.
Acceptable submissions are in the realms of research projects, essays, poetry, fictional stories, photographs, graphic art and a multitude of other areas.
Issues are published online on the first of each month. Honorable Mentions also will publish a printed version of the best submissions received in the academic year.
On Friday, Nov. 1, Honorable Mentions will host the second annual Juried Art Competition, in collaboration with University Honors and the College of Visual and Performing Arts. This collaboration seeks to acknowledge and support the creative endeavors of NIU’s students.
Selected winners will have their artwork displayed in the Capstone Library of the University Honors Program as well as have their work published in the November issue of Honorable Mentions.
Honorable Mentions is coordinated by University Honors Fellows Lauren Nale (senior rehabilitation services major with an occupational therapy emphasis) and Luis Lopez (sophomore electrical and computer engineering major). Luke Krueger, visiting assistant professor in the School of Theatre and Dance, serves as the faculty adviser.
Five University Honors students complete the student editorial board:
- Natalie Cincotta – junior history and journalism major;
- Dana Lebrecht – sophomore math education major;
- Ron Leonhardt – senior history and international relations major;
- Juliana Leprich – junior media studies and public administration and service major;
- Juan Molina – junior fine arts major with an emphasis in photography.
