“Honoring Our Past,” a special spring music concert, will be presented by DeKalb area women’s chorus Bread & Roses.
Directed by Peggy Safford, the concert is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 830 N. Annie Glidden Road in DeKalb. In addition to the 20 voice chorus, the concert features guest instrumental performers, including drummers.
All are welcome, with a freewill donation accepted at the door ($10 suggested).
The spring concert celebrates the season and honors the past. An exciting selection of music is planned to honor the women who have served as inspirations as well as acknowledging their place in history and the world, some with gospel and traditional American music, contemporary selections from female composers, as well as original songs written by chorus members.
“Standing Before Us” honors women leaders, family members and others both past and present who have made their mark on our world. A highlight will be a visual display of these female heroes and mentors.
Girls on the Run of Northwest Illinois, which inspires and encourages young women to “learn, dream, live, run,” is the beneficiary of Saturday’s concert.
This group provides “a life-changing, non-profit prevention program for girls in the thrd- through eighth-grade.” Its mission is to “inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.”
Several schools in the DeKalb area have participating groups, all run by volunteers. Their non-profit programs “instill self-esteem through health education, life skills development, mentoring relationships and physical training – all of which are accomplished through an active collaboration with girls and their parents, schools, volunteers, staff and the community.”
