The Northern Illinois track and field team capped its weekend off with a bang this morning as a quartet of Huskie runners broke the school record in the 4×1500 relay at the Raleigh Relays.

Hannah Savage, Meghan Heuer, Ali Olson and Claire McAuley teamed up to crush the record with a time of 19:33.00. The quartet topped the previous best of 20:37.22, which was set in 2010 by Amanda Trancoso, Sunsea Shaw, Breanna Brevitt and Courtney Oldenburg. NIU wound up taking eighth in the event, handily beating Belmont, High Point and Tiffin.

“It’s certainly great to get another school record,” said NIU assistant coach Greg Hipp. “It’s another sign of the improvements our distance group is making.”

Also competing today was Ashley Lucas, who ran in the second section of the 10,000 meters. The senior ran 39:38.03 to take 15th place, beating IUPUI’s Lexi Hunt and Morehead State’s Krystal Williams to the line.

The Huskies return to action next weekend when they take part in the Chicagoland Championships in Romeoville, Ill. The action starts Thursday, April 4, and runs through Saturday, April 6.
