Northern Illinois was unable to get untracked against an undefeated Buffalo team and dropped a 6-1 decision to the Bulls in Mid-American Conference women’s tennis action Saturday in Buffalo.
After its second loss of the weekend, NIU’s record stands at 14-4, 0-2 in the MAC while Buffalo improves to 10-0, 1-0.
Mary Malkin claimed the Huskies’ lone win on the day as she defeated UB’s Laura Fernandez 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (11-9) at No. 4 singles to improve her record to 15-3 on the dual match season. At No. 5 singles, Cristina Alvarez pushed UB’s Anamara Candanoza to a superset. Alvarez lost the first set in a tiebreaker, then rebounded to take the second set 6-4 before falling 10-4 in the superset.
NIU head coach Ryun Ferrell said it will up to the Huskies to rebound during the week in preparation for home matches versus Bowling Green and Western Michigan this weekend.
“It has been a rough couple of days. We have looked sluggish and tired. There is a lot of tennis is left to be played and this group responds well. When you get knocked down you have to get back up. We are down, not out.”
Northern Illinois plays host Friday, March 29, to Bowling Green, and will play Western Michigan the next day. Both matches begin at 1 p.m. (CT) at Rockford Boylan High School.
