Need a break? Have your taxes prepared for free

Photo of a 1040 tax formTax season is here and the IRS deadline is nearing.

NIU’s Department of Accountancy will help you accurately complete your taxes by providing on-campus tax preparation to students, faculty, staff and the DeKalb community.

The free service is sponsored by NIU’s Financial Cents, and is available from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays through April 10 at the NIU campus Library Student Lounge.

The Volunteer Income Tax Association (VITA) has partnered with IRS-certified volunteer tax preparers from the Accountancy Department in the NIU College of Business to offer the free tax preparation for individuals earning less than $25,000 and families earning less than $50,000.

Help is offered to foreign students as well by appointment only.

Those interested must provide:

  • Social Security card
  • Photo ID
  • All wage forms (W-2, unemployment)
  • College expenses (if any)
  • Property tax bill (if any)
  • Information for direct deposit
