Art Museum plans spring Get-on-the-Bus trips

Want to meet other art lovers, keep up with what’s happening in the art world, see innovative historical exhibits and travel without the hassle of traffic, tolls and parking? Then Get-on-the-Bus and enjoy the ride!

Museum staff members schedule the trips and make the itinerary and arrangements. Travelers simply need to sign up and prepay by the posted deadlines.

Trips depart from the NIU Visual Arts Building parking lot at the northeast corner of Gilbert Drive and College Avenue unless otherwise specified.

To register for these trips, visit the NIU Art Museum (first floor, west end of Altgeld Hall), call (815) 753-1936 or email hgreen2@niu.edu or jburke2@niu.edu. A valid parking permit is needed to park on campus during the week.

Payment may be made in advance with cash, a check made out to NIU or a major credit card. Payment must be made in advance to guarantee your seat on the bus. Only checks and exact cash payments are taken on the bus.

Dates and prices of bus trips are subject to change, and trips are frequently added throughout the year. Check online for the most updated information.

Saturday, March 2
Chicago Arts Orchestra at St. Michael’s Church in Old Town

Join us during the day as we visit the DePaul Art Museum’s current exhibition, stroll around Lincoln Park, and grab tapas at Café Ba Ba Reeba. We’ll finish the evening at St. Mike’s for the Chicago Arts Orchestra concert: Rediscovered Treasures III. Many of these Spanish and Latin American compositions have not been heard in more than 200 years.

A pre-concert talk begins at 7:30 p.m.; the concert runs from 8 to10 p.m. Bus leaves at 1 p.m. and returns at 11:30 p.m. Members are $30; students and seniors, $35; all others, $40. Price includes concert ticket and transportation, meal costs on own. Registration and payment deadline is Wednesday, Feb. 27.

Thursday, April 27, through Sunday, April 28
Get-On-The-Bus overnight trip to  Milwaukee/Racine

While we have visited both of these cities before (Milwaukee on several occasions), there is never enough time in a day to visit favorite destinations and discover some-thing new – and these Wisconsin towns have lots of both to offer.

This NIU Art Museum Get-On-The-Bus Overnighter will include visits to top-notch museums and gardens, and will feature sites and tours that focus on an array of architectural styles, and both traditional and contemporary decorative arts.

Sites include the Mitchell Conservatory; Frank Lloyd Wright’s infamous Johnson Wax Building; the Flemish-renaissance style Pabst Mansion; the Milwaukee Art Museum; the Lynden Sculpture Gardens and more. Early registration discounts are available through Friday, Feb. 22. Final registration is due Friday, March 15. Limited group size; bus and hotel space is limited.

Chicago Cultural Heritage Museums II

We continue our cultural tour around Chicago with The Indo American Center up on Devon Avenue, Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art, and The Ukrainian National Museum in the Ukrainian Village. Bus leaves at 8:30 a.m. and returns at 6:30 p.m. Members are $30; students and seniors, $35; all others, $40. Price includes museum entrance fees and transportation; meal costs on own. Registration and payment deadline is Wednesday, May 15.

Friday, June 7
Chicago Cultural Heritage Museums III

In our third installment of our cultural heritage tours,we’ll visit The Swedish-American Museum and enjoy some Swedish meatballs (or the like) in Andersonville before we visit the Dank Haus in Lincoln Square. Beer, brats and all things German will be readily available.

Bus leaves at 9 a.m. and returns at 7:30 p.m. Members are $25; students and seniors, $30; all others, $35. Price includes museum entrance and transportation; meal costs on own. Registration and payment deadline is Wednesday, June 5.

Chicago Cultural Heritage Museums IV

We conclude our tour around Chicago’s heritage museums with the Chinese-American Museum of Chicago and The Jane Addams Hull House Museum at UIC. While in the area, we’ll explore Chinatown and Little Italy. Bus leaves at 8:30 a.m and returns at 6:30 p.m. Members are $30; students and seniors, $35; all others, $40. Price includes museum entrance fees and transportation; meal costs on own. Registration and payment is due by Friday, June 7.
