‘Save A Vet’ event to honor canine soldiers

January 18, 2013

Logo of Saveavet.orgMilitary Student Services invites the public to “Save A Vet: The Other Forgotten Soldier.”

The event will take place from 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, in the Capitol Room of the Holmes Student Center.

Lindenhurst, Ill.-based Save-A-Vet  helps rescue military service dogs from being put down after they have returned from the front lines. The group also provides housing for disabled veterans in exchange for caring for the dogs.

Danny Scheurer, president of the organization, will present on the hardship of placing these dogs because of their attack training, field experiences or injuries suffered in the line of duty, including the same post-traumatic stress disorder that afflicts many human veterans.

NIU students, faculty, staff and community members are encouraged to share in this learning experience. Refreshments will also be provided.
