As 2012 draws to a close, NIU Today is offering a look back at 25 of the top stories from the year.

No. 10

NIU Department of Management professor Don Kluemper was a bit of a Facebook sensation in February and March, when his research about using Facebook in the hiring process went viral.

Kluemper, and a team of researchers, found that impressions gleaned from a five- to 10-minute perusal of Facebook pages were actually a stronger predictor of a candidate’s likelihood to excel in a job than the personality surveys that many companies require job candidates to complete.

His research was featured in the Chicago Tribune and the Wall Street Journal, and quickly exploded into cyberspace.

Over the course of a few weeks the story was Tweeted, shared and shared hundreds of thousands of times. Stories on the research appeared in newspapers and on websites across the globe.
