Community School plans fall, winter recitals

The NIU Community School of the Arts has announced the recital schedule for winter and holiday recitals.

Soloists and ensemble performances are featured in November and December on the stage of the Recital Hall and Concert Hall in the NIU Music Building.

Most performances end with a reception. All are free and open to the public.

  • Monday, Nov. 26: NIUkulele Ensemble performs at 8 p.m. in the Recital Hall. This new ensemble is directed by Eric Schroeder.
  • Tuesday, Dec. 4: CSA Symphonete performs at 6 p.m. in the Concert Hall. This string ensemble for young players is directed by Linc Smelser.
  • Wednesday, Dec. 5: CSA Guitar Ensemble performs in the Recital Hall at 8 p.m. This group is directed by Quentin Dover.
  • Saturday, Dec. 8: The Showcase Recitals are at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.in the Recital Hall. Performing are children and adults who take private lessons on a variety of instruments. Georgia Price’s piano students perform at 3 p.m. and the Suzuki piano students of Marilyn Montzka and Susan Breitner-Hurm play at 5 p.m.
  • Wednesday, Dec. 12: The CSA Children’s Choir performs at 7 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Directed by Mary Lynn Doherty, the choir performs a variety of songs for the holiday season.
  • Friday, Dec. 14: The CSA Steelband performs at 7 p.m. in the Recital Hall. This new ensemble is directed by Yuko Asada.
  • Saturday, Dec. 15: The cello students of Linc Smelser perform at 10:30 a.m., followed at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. by the Suzuki violin students of Ann Montzka-Smelser, Laurie Rodriguez and Karen Weckerly. Eric Schroder’s guitar students perform at 6 p.m. All recitals are in the Recital Hall.
